The Transport Workers Union (TWU) USA, November 2019, on the subject:
‘What Are Toxic Fumes? Cabin crew and airline passengers are being exposed to toxic fumes which can cause severe health effects, including brain damage, cancer, and loss of motor function. Passengers are often unaware that the air they breathe on board is circulated through a series of mechanical processes to “bleed” air from around the engines. When these processes malfunction, toxic fumes can seep into the cabin air, releasing gasified engine oil, hydraulic fuel, and other aircraft fluids which can become potent nerve agents.
These nerve agents can be absorbed through inhalation and through the skin. Repeated or prolonged exposure to these – such as the daily exposure flight attendants and pilots endure – may result in the same effects as acute exposure. Unfortunately, the U.K. Government and its regulator (CAA) continue with their denials of injury with the use of their deliberately manufactured pseudoscience and are managing (for the time being), to keep this scandal under wraps.
The airlines deny that there is a problem with the air inside their aircraft. They also pretend not to know that many of their employees have become ill or died as a result.
They continue to stand by their sponsored science on health effects given to them by the CAA and Government rather than act in a responsible and proactive manner by investigating and researching for themselves.
What will it take for them to start working with the aircraft manufacturers to find a solution?
They believe their lack of action, ignorance and simply burying their heads in the sand is somehow acceptable.
Those of us injured in the U.K. are being supported by our worker’s union Unite, which is funding the legal action against the U.K.-based airlines. Unite is also supporting bereaved families of deceased pilots and cabin crew in this action.
The lead cases are expected to begin in court in 2024.
